Walking the Dusk
I was asked by Howlbux (Elaine Howley and Irene Buckley) to create some visuals for a new musical piece that they were commissioned to write by Dublin Digital Radio and then perform at the Alternating Current live event in The Complex, Dublin on the 29th October 2022.
Elaine further elaborates on the ideas behind Walking the Dusk:
“Climate change is happening so fast that we can’t fit it into our current narrative, we need new ways to see and exist. Wabi Sabi is an intuitive Japanese worldview and aesthetic that focuses on the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent and incomplete and in its fullest expression can be a way of life. We wanted to look at how Wabi Sabi characteristics can be applied to sound and extend to ways of being in the world.
For our piece we imagine we are ‘Walking The Dusk’ , a moment for humans and non-humans where vision is obscured and we are looking for maps and guides. We will soundtrack this journey guided by the concept of Wabi Sabi; characteristically warm, dim, present-oriented and unfocused on progress. We will use electronics, synths, voice and cymbals to bring this to life musically.”
I tried to take the concepts explained above and represent them visually by layering various pieces of processed found footage into an abstract collage that evolved in tandem with the music.
